Anyone done a VR6 into a T25?

Post by Mr Big »

When I eventually find my T25 I will be looking into an engine conversion to make it more suited to towing. Have just sold my Passat VR6 which was a great car. I was thinking the other night that for a 2.8 V6 its a very compact motor, and reasonably torquey too...has anyone done such a conversion? In fact is it even possible?

God knows how you would get it to bolt up...im not keen on adaptor plates after seeing someone fit a cheap adaptor plates (i.e. not KEP) a couple of years back in a rail. The input shaft adaptor was about 11thou out, and then whole assembly locked solid when you tried to turn the engine over!

Does the audi 5 cyl by any chance have the same bolt pattern?

Thanks,
Craig.

Username T25Trooper had a TUVed VR6 adaptor plate, clutch and flywheel for sale a while back. I was going to have it, but then thought '180bhp out of 2.8litres?', so have settled for 140bhp out of 2.2 and rather less weight.

There is also a Syncro doka in the USA that has a really clean conversion on it, one of the things I remember the guy saying was that the sump was rather low and the VR is a tall motor, so you'd need to extend your engine compartment up in a van, or put it in a pick up.

There are far more interesting options in the 5cylinder configuration and a lot more mounting kit parts about, just don't forget the brace at the rear cross member as the Audi lumps allegedly have a habit of tearing gearboxes in half after a while if this isn't fitted.

Hmmm...the price of complete running cars on ebay could also be a factor

£300 for a legacy vs 3/4 times that for a VR6. And I wouldnt have to worry about those f**king timing chains again

I owned a VR6 Bluestar a few months ago and it was an absolute joy to drive. It cruised at 75/80mph at about 3500rpm and returned 30mpg at a steady 70-75 which ain't too bad.120mph is more than capable as well(on a private road of course :D)
It also had a specially built gearbox from Herr Winkler to match the engines power and torque, and it is a well advisable modification.
I didn't do the conversion myself but it was a very neat job.The sump does sit quite low though so lowering more than 45mm on the rear is not very advisable.A shorter sump would do the trick though.

Oh and the VR6 conversion set up mentioned above was bought by me and now i've got a 2.5i SA Caravelle i can't see me using it so it may be up for sale
