auxillary water pump
the auxillary water pump is there to keep engine coolant flowing when the engine is not running but the coolant temp is in excess of the temp switch setting (105c if the top off my head) this i belive is to stop engine damage from coolant hotspots in the engine leading to problem's such as cylinder head warpage and cylinder head gasket failure there are many other vehicle's in the volkswagen range using these pumps mainly the one's that are more thermaly stressed ie large engine small engine bay or big van with to smaller engine might be worth sorting your pump out as the 1.9 engine will be loading the system a little more than the 1.6 did to start with i belive the 1.6 normaly aspirated vans did'nt have the aux pump only the 1.6td's as i have another set of coolant hoses that have no take off for the pump?

I don't think any of the 1.9td have these but i know they are fitted on the intercooled 1.6td in other vw's and since putting the 1.9 AAZ in I've not heard the pump cut in at all when switching off whereas with the JX you could 9x out of 10 thought there may be fault but at first but everthing checks out ok
