Engine breather ?

I have need to change the rubber breather pipe.

I can see no problem with changing the pipe but do I need to ?? clean out the breather housing itself. Haynes is as clear as custard on a foogy day.

Yes you may call me thick, but what is the purpose of the breather and the pipe?

The breather relieves crank case pressure so that the engine doesn't blow all it's oil past the many seals that are usually doing a fairly poor job of keeping it where it needs to be. Basically it takes oil/water vapour from the engine and sucks it into the induction system
I think the breather housing has a lightly sprung flapper valve in it but I don't believe it can be dismantled to be cleaned. It should be OK as is but If you decide to unbolt it get yourself a new 'O' Ring and remember to reconnect the earth lead that sits under one of the bolt heads.
