You can but a connector that just clips to your battery via crocodile clips for about a fiver from motorworld or halwits thats wot i use for me coolbox or anything else i need to plug in

Basicaly.

All my vans have had lighter Skts fitted, so I'd assume yours is an early model.

Find a place in your dash to fit the Skt (Mine is to the left of the stereo.
Check there are no wires behid the place you intend to drill ( or hold them out of the way.

Connect the outer of the sKt to earth (Van chasis, )
Connect the inner to 12V via a 15A fuse. VW use fuse No 3 in the Fuse board shared with radio and interior lights)
You may feel better splicing in to the radio feed if you have one.

If you use an existing fused circuit be aware that the power draw of the cigerette socket might exeed the fuse leaving you with a blown fuse each time, and as fuses are rated to specific circuit's you run the risk of damaging the unit that wire feeds or even the wire. If I was you I would go directly the battery put a fuse in on the live, red, + side and secure it out of harms way in the battery compartment. They are dirt cheap and potentially could stop you van going woooof. I use the blade in-line fuse holders as it matches the fuses in my van. Your other option is to see if there is a spare power supply in the fuse box but that is getting a bit technicle for me.
One thing, this has come up quite a few times and it has been pointed ot that you shouldn't use a "cigerette lighter" but a 12volt aux socket, check back through the posting's in technicall
