12v Sockets Whats the Difference

Hello,

Can someone tell me what the main difference between these 2 sockets are? I've never seen this 'Din Socket before'...Don't most 12v equipment us a lighter type fitting?

yes, most equipment does come with ciggie plugs but they wern't designed for long high current use. I'm very surprised that they rate them at 20Amps (although they do down rate to 16A with 1,5mm cable).

I would be inclined to use the DIN one (it even has TUV approval) but you would probably have to chage plugs on your equipment too.

I believe the first one will actually take a standard car cigarette lighter whereas the second din type will only take the 12v equipment plugs such phone car charger etc these normaly are fused accordingly so if the din socket is rated 16A and you use cable of at least that capacity with a 15A fuse on the supply you can't go far wrong. as the side contacts are spring loaded on the 12v plugs they will fit the socket and give a much tighter fit unlike the cigarette lighter socket type where they tend to work loose very easily

ahh I see so I probably shouldn't of taken out the Din Socket then

My plan was to replace it with the cigarette style as I had no idea what it was... But at least this way I won't have to change the sockets on my equipment. Maybe I should put both in?

By the way, I'm planning to put a little mini fridge in it from time to time... I think they draw around 4-5amps. Is there anything I should consider?

you can also get little plastic sleeves for the din plugs so the fit a ciggy lighter.
