Brake pipe advice please

Post by MacAoidh »

I've just had my first go getting the van MoT'd, various minor things that I can handle, one welding job, and a brakes issue:

* Nearside front to caliper brake pipe corroded
* Offside rear brake hose ferrule excessively corroded

The whole braking system needs work, including new discs, perhaps new drums. And I've no idea when the fluid was last changed. Not in the 3 years I've had it.

I'd like to squeeze the van through the test as soon as poss, then rebuild the brakes later: does that make sense? Sorting the pipes now, everything else later. Or does it only make sense to do it all at once? And am I right in thinking these two items are what Simon B sells in stainless?

And any other handy jobs to do at the same time?

Wiki has some info on this...

Simon sells stainless armoured brake hoses
Replacement pipes are fairly easily had at local Motofax shops, in Copper Nickel which is better all-round than original bundy tubing.

done this on my van for an mot and in my opinion is really easy to replace the whole front end of brake pipes without much hassle anyway just keep a weekend free pipe flaring tool and all the fittings  do it right once imo and change he fluid at the same time D

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.
