Starter Motor Problems

Post by mike the van »

The sage continues , having fixed the fuel pump with an electric one the starter seems to have given up !

The engine is a 2.0 l A/C , the starter has always been a bit reluctant to disengage when the battery is low and keeps turning even with the ignition switched off. Took it off cleaned the shaft, the bush looked OK so didnt disturb it !

I installed the new electric fuel pump and the starter turned over a few times very slowly and then it did the rattling/grating noise , stopped turning the engine over and then there was a strong burning smell coming from the starter and a few whisps of smoke , not sureif the solenoid or not, rapid exit to disconnect battery as starter still pulling a current.
Sounds like time for a new one???? but which one GSF list one also one pre 81 for all petrol then 01/81 onwardsA/C Manual , JK show the same

Is there any difference. The engine I have isn't the original so the date of registartion o1/81 isn't reliable. I am on the west coast of scotland so getting anything to a specialist is next to impossible without a big drive. Engine Code is CU 042620

Any help
