What tyres should i use on my wheels?

Post by dridgy »

Hi I have a T25 Kombivan which i have converted into a camper.
A couple of years ago i bought some chrome 5 spoke wheels with good 195/70/14 H rated tyres on them.
They are now starting to wear out so i went to my local Kwikfit to see how much new tyres would be.
They looked at them and said i should have van rated tyres on the wheels.
Is this true or are they just saying that?
The van has handled fine with these tyres on.
A friend of mine told me today that she has a set of good tyres on her car that she is scrapping they are same size as mine.
She said i could have them to put on my rims.
But now im worried that i should only have van rated tyres on, so can someone advise me on this please.
thanks

john.

What tyres should I use on my wheels?

Hi Dridgy, This question pops up regularly & was asked only last week I think. Basically car tyres are for cars & van tyres with their stronger
side walls are for vans. Someone pointed out last week that you must always look at the load rating of the tyre(s)!
Some car tyres have a high enough load rating to cope with a T25 but be careful. If you fit incorrectly rated tyres & you have an accident in your van you insurance company will not pay out :!:
My advice is to by proper van tyres - remember your life & your beloved van rely heavily on those 4 bits of rubber in contact with the road. :D

Tis true, van rated tyres are what you should have, some people have used car tyres with no problems but it is not advisable especially with a camper. the standard wheels are 185 r14 C (the c is for commercial) Continental vancos and Kumho 857 have been recommeded by members in the past. shop around may work out cheaper sourcing your own tyres then going to local back street tyre fitter to put then on for like 4-6£ a tyre.there is a section on the wiki about it, but its not working at the moment

I got a set of 195x14c of a transit, fit and look good, also the circumference is 2 1/2 " greater so it's upped the gearing a bit which is good.

Check out www.mytyres.co.uk I've found continental vancos in a 195/70/R15 on there for £44. I'm about to order a couple for my van and my local tyre fitter is putting them on for £10 each
