can`t fit interior light

i have just brought a new flu interior light i have a green & black wire
i put the red&white to the black &the green to the white nothing ,do`s eny
one know were these wire`s go as we don`t have eny camping lights .
the wire`s go to the back of the camper to a back light but we don`t have one at the moment tryed evry thing i know but can`t get enything

i put a gauge on the wire last week there was something there , but i don`t have the gauge this time

Wires the right way around?
Flourescents are polarity sensitive ( smart ass way of saying they only work when connected the right way around)
Red to Black doesent sound good.
