Post by ermie571 »

How easy / difficult? They were off last year when the engine was changed...

what are the pitfalls? :(

Heat exs

Post by cumbriankeith »

As no one else has said anything I'll chuck my ha'porth in:
The worst factor is usually to do with awkward rusty nuts - but as yours must have been off last year this shouldn't be an issue. You have to scabble around underneath and the heat ex to head studs need a good socket set to access them. Putting them back on needs more hands than two, or a cunning method for holding the exs and their gaskets up while you put the nuts on. Leave all the nuts loose until you have all the bits connected (ie heat exs/silencer).

Thanks Keith.
We have a good socket set...well, it has done everything we have asked of it so far!

Have bought the penetrating spray - not WD40 - Halfwits own as they don't ave plusgas anymore. Will start spraying the bolts a couple of days before the replacement is planned.

Hubby has two hands, and I can assist where necessary! Might even rope in the teenage son for added friction! ('tween father and son)

thanks for the guidance

Will try an photograph and do write up for wiki.

The nuts on the silencer are the most difficult to get off - the one at top middle. I cut a 13mm ring spanner in half and used another on the shaft to turn it. no way to get anyting on it cos of the tinware. Done it twice before on my old devon a/c but glad I dont have to do it anymore.
good luck with it you will get there in the end.

Awkward nuts

Yeah you're right Ray - I have plans to butcher a 13mm spanner into a sort of cranked shape to get a bit more swing.
