This almost happened to me driving one of Dad's old vans, drew up to a busy junction and suddenly there was all this crackling and sparking and horrible smell from behind me, the rubber mat over the battery had moved allowing both terminals to come in contact with the lid..... I've never got out of the seat so fast in all my life, it stopped in a jiffy and I recovered the terminals. After reading about the battery exploding I guess I was lucky there!
