flywheel seal!!
Having removed the flywheel i have replaced the rubber O ring inside the flange that marries up with the end of the crank. I am also changing the crankshaft oils seals. I have just discovered that there was a felt washer/seal that was pressed in to the centre of the flywheel along with a spacer, this has perished and broken up. Haynes says that this should be replaced "if fitted" do i need this felt seal and if so who does em cos i cant source them?

My 1981 2ltr aircool cu engine had a overhaul recently by my self. The flywheel seal was replaced .My aircool has an automatic gearbox the felt seal i think is for the manual gearbox input shaft which keps it lightly lubricated. As my auto box has no input shaft it was not required.Prehaps you could obtain some felt and make up a seal

Felt seal
You can get the felt seal from VW costs 24p + VAT.
VW part # 021105311, it's described as a seal.
It's a very light/femmer/floppy ring of felt to look at.
