Starting Problems

Post by mike the van »

Following on from before, the starter motor now cleaned and is back in.

The bus started and ran for about 2 minutes then died off and no restarting it .
the whole sorry saga started with water in the fuel tank, excuse me being a numpty, but if water in fuel got to carbs, will that work its way through or is it stripping the carbs down or just taking the top off and looking in the float chamber. I am getting really p*****d off, first the water in the tank, then a sticking starter and now back to not firing up !!! I need her running to get to the MOT

If it was just in the carbs, I would say it would normally clear very quickly by just running it.

However if it wont run it might be best to get that possibility out of the way by cleaning out the float chamber(s).

After that try feeding the carbs with clean fuel from a can just to eliminate that possiblility also.

After that it, must be down to checking sparks / timing issues.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

Starting Problems

I admitted defeat and called in a mate who had beetles in the past. Fuel now seems OK, although tank repair and new breathers was a good idea to have any way.
It looks like there is an intermittent ignition problem so a new coil looks to be the next step or the ignition black box !

Problem is the coil is a replacement not a Bosch so not identifiable, I think the transistorised ignition looks very similar to that on mid to late 80's Polos and Golf, Does anyone know if thats right, they come with a colour spot to identifythe coil, my Polo is a green spot, does that make any difference????

Cheers

hi mike,

had similar probs with my a/c ages ago. I learned several things from the experience

1. how to remove the starter
2. What points should look like
3. what happens when you put the wrong coil as supplied by halfwits on
4. what melted points look like!!!! (the result of 3!)

Anyway,
I now have a standard set up with distrivuter with vacuum advance. If I remember - at the time I had one of those 009 bosch thingies that had points in it. I purchased a coil, which turned the engine, but no firing - twas for electronic ignition!!! The actual problem was with the bush in the starter, and the old coil was refitted....

Hope you sort yours out - but Halfwits assured me that the coil was right for the van, and it wern't! The new coil, however, did a stunning job jammed in the gap tween the van and the back door to hold it open while we sorted the points... was a bit dented, so didn't go back...

Emma

If you want any coding etc from the coil, let me know and I will try and obtain the details. (providing you are on the standard set up)
