I have just finished installing a brand new engine from VW, complete with a stainless steel exhaust system. My mechanic/mate has suggested instead of putting back the grotty old heat sheild over the exhaust we leave it off and he is going to fabricate a shelf for the header tank to sit on. Will this create any problems.
Cheers in advance steve

Exhaust cover/heat shield thingy Question???????
Always remember one thing my friend, this is the real thing. Life is not a dress rehearsal. So live life to the full with your BUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He probably means all the bolts have seized and sheared off in the Rivnuts getting it off - quite common.
Have left mine off on a turbo diesel, no problems, but exhaust runs considerably cooler than a petrol - suck it and see?
Best see what others say, its probably the belt(s) that might suffer most, when stopping after a fast run - VW thought it needed it though
