My bus is now on the drive - hzah! But it has the sound of a V1 (Jane was convinced she saw loads of old folks running for the Anderson Shelters when we were driving him home)

So this leads me to my request for advice:

I would like to replace the exhaust, what do the members recommend?

George is a 1987 t25 Vanagon, Californian import. All bits are original. He is running a 2.1L petrol and there seems to be a catalytic converter on the system (do I need to keep this, can I replace it, shoudl I scap the cat?)

All help, as usual, gratefully appreciated.

No you don't need the cat. Get a DJ rear box and get a de-cat J pipe from Brickyard. You need to keep the lambda sensor. Don't get oil on it as it's a chemical generator and this will damage it. They are £115 +VAT from VW for the Bosch sensor or a universal one from GSF for £30 but they don't last very long.

I've just fitted a stainless steel system from JP Exhausts in Maccelsfield in Cheshire, expensive at £468.00 (inc vat) but with a lifetime guarentee I'll never have to buy another exhaust. see link below

Hi Beach Bum, you fitted this yourself? Was it the entire exhaust system - heads to tailpipe or just the muffler end?

Just sooooooo hard to believe - after your warning I explained very carefully to the chimp with the hammer, guess what!
Off to GSF for a Lambda sensor - the brick pattern on my forehead is beginning to bleed!! :x :x :x :x :x

glad I got a new bosch last year before they went up - 20% increase, thanks a lot...
had to go genuine as the gsf ones (Thompson) didn't work for long, but Simon has used another one from gsf with success so I'd check which one he got.
