Damn seized brake union ...grrr!

Post by Wavehead »

Need to change the front flexible n/s brake hose for the MOT ... not a problem a straightforward job 20 mins tops you might think? It appears that the solid brake pipe nut is seized and I am unable to undo it. :x
I am guessing I will have to cut the solid pipe and replace it with a new one? Has anyone done this & is it a tricky job :?:
(cant see where the pipe runs and how far etc).

Failing that a top tip for freeing the seized union would be a blessing? Thanks Keith.

Evening Keith..just had the same problem with my van. I tried everything to get the union nut off (soaking it for days in WD40 etc) but just couldn't get a hold on it. Eventually had work done at Type 3 Dets as the pistons etc had seized too. My limited experience is that you could cut the hard pipe but you would need to have the pipe flanging kit to add on a new nut etc. Replacing the hard pipe looked looked fairly straightforward...a local Auto shop could make you up some new pipe for £2/3 metre. Have a crawl under the van and the pipe curls up and round and joins to a 3 way connector. There's been a coupla post about flexi hoses (I think Simon Baxter sells good uns). I , like you thought it would only be a hour or two job but my male pride and confidence took a real knock when I couldn't even free the union bolt. Being a very amateur mechanic, I'm happy pottering about in the engine bay, bodywork etc but couldn't break through the confidence barrier for fixing me brakes (much to the relief of my other half).

Good luck and I'm sure you'll get a far more professional mechanical reply than mine :?

Cornish, your a gent! thanks for that... will look at taking the whole pipe off if it's accessible as you say (if it stops raining I'll get under and have a gander  ). Found a site that will make pipes to order for info of others its http://www.brake-pipe.co.uk/ Will try and source one locally first. Simon was very helpful and made me a pipe for the clutch af ew months back. Have already got the flexible hose from German & swedish for just over a fiver.

Regards Keith
