diff locks again

Post by Ray »

Just got out and under today to sort out rear diff lock. Got actuator and all the bits ready as there was not one fitted just the bracket there.
When I first got the vehicle 18 months ago the actuator rod appeared pushed in with just the locking pin hole showing. Now the rod sticks out about 1 inch and after jacking both wheels on one side the lock works when pushing in the rod. I think originally I may have been driving around with the diff lock stuck on as the vc got hot and I had to have it replaced. The rod seems to stick out further than TH's pictures and I think it was russell that said there may have been some boxes with longer rods?
The actuator seems to line up OK with the bracket hole and pin on the actuator. Does approx 1" sticking out from the sleeve seem right for the off position.

.. and does the rod try to sklide back out of its own accord after its been pushed?
Marginal spring and dependent on corrosion between rod and bush, but should 'want' to diengage of its own accord when jerking wheel back and forth, if so, that's a very good sign and you shouldn't have any problems...

As Russel says the front ones go in further and to be honest, can compleetly defeat you (I mean me!), if its bad . Right  ers

P.S. My vac gauge is now a turbo boost gauge hehe! But can be quickly disconnected for testing vac lines, so give us a call if you've still no joy.

PSPS. If its was on all the time why was light off? Tell-tale disconnected?

Russel here.A very comon fault with the telltail is a faulty sender in the gearbox.Need to remove actuator and bracket to remove the sender unless u have a very special socket.

Fixed rear diff now working well. Indicator light comes on now - the lead had been left off or knocked off when someone changed the gearbox.
Just got to tackle the front now, seems to need freeing up. Looks like less access at front though.
Thanks for your help

If it starts to get hellish, give up with front until diff out one day hence, just not worth it in my opinon unless you are serious off-roading in extreme conds

I reckon the early gearboxes had this 'short shaft' on the lockers - by early I mean really early, like 85-86 only.

The gearbox I borrowed out of your silver van had this short shaft and the gearbox out of Jake's Westy had the short shaft, too.
