anyone running anything other than colways atacama / macho etc

been looking at 'Mickey Thompson' tyres, brand new, as in not retreads and they seem a reasonable price

have been doing some tyre spotting recently, notice most of the tractors running round her have a tread pattern like this . .

and machos' look like this . .

co-incidence?

having watched matt & several others 'gooning' at coney, are macho style patterns ideal for the combination of mud / wet grass / road use a syncro is likely to meet?

i thought my biggest problem at coney using AT's, apart from poor driving, was sliding sideways on fairly minor slopes

would 'V' shape treads help this?

you were going side-ways cos you were going far too slow in the wrong direction,with the wrong tyres, no conviction, your foot on the brakes too many times instead of letting the gears do the work! oh and a van full of pikeys!!!

Andy - tyres is a question of what do you want them to do and when. If you are doing a lot of road miles then I'd suggest good road tyres and a second set of mud-pluggas (any of the previously mentioned types - Colways being cheapest, Attacamas pos the best in 15"- though of course with the 16 you have a slightly different range of choices available) for use at events.
MT's are pretty noisy on road, have different handling characteristics and road use will rub-off the edges which help to give them bite in the mud. But you may be happy to drive them to and fro the event to avoid wheel changing, most people do that - I'm the exception in that I hate driving the MT's on road (sounds like driving an underground train, especially if aired down at all, and less predictable handling - I drove 4000 miles round NZ on SAT's and vowed never again) and don't see any point in wearing them out doing so, so I always swap over.
At's are a compromise, fairly quiet and decent road handling but as you found less good in the sticky stuff though pretty good in the dry off road

for what its worth I found Aidens colway MTs very 'grabby' . although I dont have experience of driving any other offroad tyres, I would be tempted to get a set of these purely for offroading. The tyre switch took about 20 mins with Andys help and McGills impact driver, it would also give you a chance to rotate your road tyres whilst they're off.

rather large poke in the eye for the rest of you

my plan is to have 2 sets as most of mileage will be on road, and like bob says, it doesn't take too long to change over

is only a thought at this stage . .fishing for info . .broadening my knowledge

add to the extra set of tyres - get yourself a 12v/rechargeable wheel wrench a bit like McGill had.

Perhaps the Syncronauts club should put a collection together to get one for the Syncro meets

If you are serious about having road and offroad sets, then I'd be gong as knarly as possibly for the offroad set, and possibly some decent Winter Van tyres for the Road set. That way you are not comprimising on either. Which is effectively what AT type tyres are doing.

I'd say go for offroad only tyres, but then, technically, you are ruling yourself out from Greenlaning, as that is on public byways and more often than not require driving on "proper" roads in between. The Greenway range from Colway seem very popular and offer very good prices. I have done several hundred miles of road travel on Atacamas on my set on the Westie without issue. See whatever fits your size and budget!

Well as ure first question asks.
I have just fitted a set of INSA dakars to my new toy(not on the road yet though)
These are for a little on road but mainly off road use and very agressive.
These are quite well priced but as yet have not tested.
