no gas tank on my Westy, what the hell do I do?? (update)

Post by pictonroad »

I really don't believe this.... I think I may well have bought a duff van... Being an expert in hindsight only I have, this weekend discovered that, amongst other things, my Westy does not have a gas tank under the vehicle. (Seller told me it needed filling up, I failed to notice it wasn't there.....You don't need to say it, I know already how much of a tw@t I have been)

So my question to you is, can I just cut into the piping to the hobs and braze on a adaptor for a gas cylinder? I guess that the hobs will work on camping gaz/propane wont they?

Second question, someone in the Fatherland has butchered the water inlet on the outside of the vehicle, does anyone know where I could source a replacement from?

Cheers

James

Hi James,

My Gas tank was going to prove a pain in the a*** when offroading (as proven by an incident within a week of buying the van :? ).

All I did was use a normal "Camping-Gaz" cylinder restrained securely in the cupboard below the sink and drawer. Cut through the Westy gas feed pipe before the yellow cutoff tap. Got a regulator and some gas hose and slipped the hose over fixing the gas hose securly over the feed pipe with a fuel line clip (like jubilee but betterer). Bobs your mothers brother.
I make sure the regulator is turned off before driving anywhere...

My Westy is the same, someone has fitted a regulator and gas pipe and it now runs off the red gas bottles. I always turn it off when driving and at night when sleeping just to be on the safe side.

Wahey!!! :D :D :D

You have no idea how sick I felt thinking that I'd just wasted mine and my trusting girl's money on a heap.

You lot have cheered me up no end, I'm just starting to get into the camper way of thinking... I can't fix everything NOW, I just need to relax and treat it like a rolling never ending project.... 8)

Feel sooo much better knowing that I should be able to get the fridge and hob going....

so, how do I make toast then?  :D

If its just the keys anyone needs (westy that is), use double glazing window lock keys. they fit perfectly...
My westy has the same, converted to gas cylinder. tanks not there but under the sink there is a cut gas pipe. Also the union nut and pipe are still there under the van.
ps..... most cheap westies are heaps...... welcome to the club........

And if you decide after all that you want an underfloor tank then come and speak to me, we do a modern equivalent of the westy tank as a direct replacement for those old rusty tanks, you can of course still buy the original in Germany, I think Gunzel has a handle on these but they are big bucks.

Update...

I now have a chance to get hold of a Westy to break with a tank on it, is it worth the effort to get the proper thing bearing mind the pipe leading under mine is pretty rusty...

or, should I just stick a cylinder in it?

:?:

If you just want a useable camper-be easier to use gas bottles--buy 'em from a car boot sale for 3 quid rather than pay full price--when yoove plumbed it all in turn on gas and cover all joints with washingup liquid/water solution & look for bubbles--ie leaks--
