Piston Rings DJ engine

Post by Pickles »

I have taken the head of my DJ wasserboxer due to low compression on one cylinder. Ring no 2 has broken into little pieces. Any ideas why this has happened.
Any one used Total seal rings? who sells them
What is the difference between 1.9 rings and 2.1 rings
Can you fit 1.9 pistons in a 2.1 does this change compression.

Piston ring was possibly broken when first fitted but managed to survive this long!
Don't know about total seals!
Piston diameter the same (ready to be shot down here)
No the 1.9 piston is taller (as I found out recently) :x

Piston Rings for DJ engine have a suffix A on the end of the part No on Ekta indicating they are different what is the difference.
Can 1.9 rings be fitted to 2.1 pistons
I know the bore is the same.

Spoke to the very helpfull Just Kampers
They confirmed that the rings are different for the 1.9 and 2.1
They didn't know what the difference was. They said it wouldn't be much as the part no was the same only the suffix A which suggest some modification
The will be getting stocks in on the 17th March 2.1 £22.95
1.9 £29.95
Still don't know what the difference is

David,

VW price (on ETOS) for both versions of the piston-ring set is 22.02. I'd recommend using VW unless there's a good reason not to so they realise people still need T3 bits...

Yes agree, VW door window wiper rubbers are cheaper than JK, JK say, ah well, they must have over ordered and lowered their prices to shift them - Right! (So why don't JK lower theirs to match?)

There are maybe a dozen detail dimensions on a piston ring that could be fractionally different, yet look the same.

I do usually buy my stuff from VW, good service, No postage, deliver to my house, give me discount. Ekta is essential.
I spoke to Laurie Petit about 2.1 rings. They are different it is the oil control rings that are different. The top two rings are the same.
It is the 2nd ring in mine that has gone. I have plenty 1.9 2nd rings in stock.
