temp + 5 speed
Hi I have been told that if I put a 5 speed box in my 1.6D the engine will run to hot.
Fact or fiction?
Where should the temp needle be, 12.00, 12.05 or in the little box?

Utter fabrication. If you drive your 1.6NA D hard with any gearbox it will get hot and hopefully you will kill your engine.
This will allow you to put a proper engine that creates actual power in your van, rather than an engine that is rumoured to create some sort of unspecified output that might be power on a good day, if the sun's shining, but it's not too hot and the grass has been mown recently.

Disregarding diesel haters out there if you put a five speed box in your van you will have to consider the suitability of the ratios for your engine. Five speeds and diesels go together but if it's a petrol box then first will be too high for the little thing straining it as you pull off and fifth may be too low meaning higher revs at lower speeds. There are lots and lots of diferent gearboxes out there though and it may not be a problem, Brickyard had some excelent info on his site.
The other thing someone is bound to tell you as well is that the 5 speed box is considered weaker than the four speed box. I can see no reason for it causing overheating other than extra strain caused by wrong ratios though.

It not a matter of hating diesels, Euan - it's hating specific, gutless, under-sized lumps that should never have been installed there in the first place.

Thanks. I know that the 1.6D us gutless but I really don't have money for a new engine at the moment. I plan on getting a 1.6turbo when I can afford it.
(of couse if Mr Hell has a free one in his garage

I guess the red light behind the needle is temp warning light.

the red light flashes for a number of reasons, low level of coolant being one.
basically,if it flashes other than at start up, stop and check for leaks and level.
the temp guage is about right any where where you describe to be honest.
if you are happoy with the engine ,great. it works fine. no engine swap ever goes to plan
