suppose its not the done thing to run the engine in gear with only one end jacked up is it.

Like TC says, its one of the VC test schedules. Its long term speed differences that might slowly damage the VC. That is what the VC is designed for, to absorb some speed differences in the driveline, so lets not be too 'delicate'
