My boot stays on the cup on the doka, but its old and split on the velle so its not doing a lot of good!
To change those boots you will need to take the angled bit off the end, to do this properly its easiest to get it in a vice as Harryman says, but to do that you will need to pull apart the splined part which is the secret to finding your gears! If you choose to do this you will need to mark EXACTLY the point where it joins, not only the length but the spline/spline match too! Good luck.

The special grease is an olefin type, and is the easiest way to part with £25 for 500g that I know. VW dealers still stock it. I'll have a look at the reference numbers on the tub (i.e. the SAE standards which it has to meet) and post them later; you may be able to match them with a lubricant supplier and avoid paying the VW price...
BTW it IS special; it has the consistency of cold margarine and is dark vanilla in colour, and is a pain to wash-off your hands. I assume it has superior water-repellent capabilities, which would make sense considering the stick (sic) that the gear linkage gets.

Sorry for the delay; my garage currently resembles an explosion in a hardware store - yes, the resto is underway, pics soon - so it took me a while to find the tub.
The genuine grease is "Polyurea Grease":
VAG part number G 052 142 A2 (400g tub).
A note on the tub reads: "For use under extreme thermal and mechanical conditions (from -40 deg C to 180 deg C)".
The two references on the tub read:
BAG T Nr.: 619000. Giftklassefrei. Kein Publikumsprodukt (Schweiz).
OFSP T No.: 619000. Non classe toxicite. Produit non destine au publique (Suisse).
Unfortunately it appears to be unique, and not destined for public use (at least not in Switzerland at any rate; do the Swiss eat grease when they tire of milk chocolate?), so you're stuck with buying it from VW unless you can find another supplier of polyurea grease with a suitable operating temperature range.
Hope that helps a bit - I'm off to hang my anorak up

thanks for that, off to do a google search for polyurea grease. had a good look under the van at the linkage and it seems easy enough to drop the cup. rather than seperate the front and back rods at the spline would it be possible to split the uj joint instead therefore not upsetting the spline setting?

Yes, but the circlips holding the pins on the UJ in place are very tight, so you may have a bit of fun extracting them! I levered them out with a pair of snipe-nose pliers and a small flat-bladed screwdriver. You need to make sure they go back in fully home, or the pins will wear the yoke in the link rod out (£75 for a replacement, and I think I had the last one that VAG had in stock in Europe).
Good luck!
