Ignition wire route?

Post by dearjohn »

Hi, can any of you knowledgable folk tell me where the wire from the ignition switch to the starter selonoid actually runs? My van is a 1984 Joker 3 1.9 waterboxer, LHD.
There is power in the trigger wire leaving the switch, but none arrives at the selonoid. I expect that it runs along the left hand side , behind the fridge/cooker etc. The van has been unused since september, and a mouse or mice got in somehow, seem to have carried a lot of fibreglass insulation (from around the fridge?) and built a nest in one of the cubbotds. I,m guessing the little buggers have ate through the wire, but cannot see where it runs. Any help gratefully recieved.
PS don't leave bags of peanuts in your van, the ate the lot. Never touched the packets of soup however. Do they know something we dont?

One or more mice were the reason we got our camper so cheap at £500. My mates wife found some mouse droppings in it and wouldn't go in it any more. I did find a mouse nest in the top bunk but as we removed it to make into bedding store and cupboard space it didn't matter. To be honest when we come back from a trip our first job is to drain the water tank, empty the cupbards and fridge of food and wipe the whole lot down with disenfecant. Finding mould and mildew after a cold damp winter really is the pits!
As far as the wire goes I recon you will finish up leaving the open circuit wire in place and simply running another by the route you find easiest. I had to run a sensor wire from the engine bay to the radiator fan connection and simply tywrapped it along the rad hose in sight under the van so I can keep an eye on it. Looms don't always get on with being poked about.

The wiring runs underneath the van along the chassis rail you can see the loom in the nearside wheel arch. There is a connector between the ignition switch and where the loom exits throught the front of the body under the dash.

Thanks guys,
If it ever stops raining I'll get under and have a good search. I was afriad it ran under the kitchen units, and that they would have to be removed. I needed it today and ended up running a lenght of extension cable from the selonoid up under the engine hatch , along the top of the sink and with a bare end to tickle on a bit of the cable at the steering column that I had stripped. Not very elegant. Not very safe either, but better than walking. Merry Christmas one and all on the forum. Nigel.
