1600 CT exhuast/carb help

Post by A KIRK »

Ok so today I thought I'd replace the gasket between the heat exchanger and the head on the passenger side, now I've undone all the bolt apart from 2 ok with no problems.

The 2 I am stuck with are from the what I call warm air pipe from the the top of the heat exchanger to the carb.

The top metal pipe in this :

So my thoughts are Cut the pipe and block it up Carb end and exchanger end, Can I do this on just one side or will I need to block both sides up?

What are the implications of doing so if I block one side and not the other or block both etc?

I assume these bolts are threaded into the exchanger so could it be possible to drill them out and tap new threads into the exchanger?

Or would it be possible to remove the rubber parts on the main inlet, would this give me enough movement to move the exchanger up to put a new gasket on?

I don't really want to take apart the drivers side, as its not broken so my theory is if its not broken don't fix it.

Any ideas would be great as I really want to get her back on the road asap, now I've started

Thanks
Andrew

Halfords Shock Unlock is really good - it freed up a brake nipple that I'd been trying to undo for a couple of days with heat and penetrating oils!

Single hex 10mm socket, or, if its too worn, a 3/8" socket, knocked on with a hammer.
Threads are 6mm so easy to drill and tap if they snap

Cheers for the advise, I've used rust off ice on it, but I don't know if it has helped as I've not had time to play with it today.

Hopefully will get time tomorrow
