Starting problems - Starter not even turning

Post by eddbmxdude »

Hi guys,

Not been on here for a long time, the new forum looks great :ok
I have started working on our van again recently as I have fresh enthusiasm for it. I was doing some welding to it the other day and wanted to turn the van around to work on the other side. I put a fully charged battery in it and turned the ignition on. The relays all clicked like they normally do but when I turned the key to start it there was nothing. The starter didn't turn at all and I didn't even hear the solenoid flick out. Last time we had it running you had to hold the key in the start position for about half to one second before anything would happen, do you think it could be related?

I have had a search and I have read the Wiki but I didn't find anything usefull.

Thanks,
Edd

could be the ignition switch .. take the cowl off and as you turn the key wiggle the wires that come out of the bottom of the barrel

sounds like solenoid/contacts
try hitting it with wooden mallet/handle of lump hammer, ideally while someone else is turning the key and ensuring vehicle is in neutral. If it works it's only a temp fix, motor will want changing when you get round to it,
but could be ignition switch or a wire off obviously

I did give it a whack with a broom handle but I was on my own so I had to hit it and then go and try again. I will have another look at the weekend, I have a few spare solenoids so will try changing that.

Check you are getting 12V at the spade connector on the solenoid when you turn the key, and that the spade connector hasent corroded.

My thoughts exactly. It could have even come off.

Is it a diesel? Mine has played up in the same way in that it can take a split second for the starter to kick in. Other times it just wont kick in at all and I just get clicks or in fact nothing at all. It been like this for 6 months until lats week when nothing at all happened so I abandoned it till the weather gets warmer.I'll try to find my thread on the subject.

Well, turns out there was nothing wrong at all!
The battery we were using said it has 360Amps of cranking power and it didn't even make the starter stir. We tried another battery we had laying around, a 300amp one, and it turned the van over fine  So I don't know whats wrong with the first one :?:
New battery time by the looks of it.

I guess we could have never helped then... as that would have been the first answer to your query
