hunting on idle

Post by ermie571 »

Hey folks,

2.1 carb running lpg and petrol

Annoying problem......

The camper is revving its knackers off at idle on LPG when its warm.

Just been out to it from cold and wet!

She started no problem, and held an idle (a nice oneat 1000) on LPG almost immediately. Drove it round the block to warm her up. Needed a fair few round the blocks to get it up to temp (needle on and just past half mast). Brought it back, plonked it nose upwards up the hill, left engine running, whipped the grill off, and the rad was *just* starting to get warm on the bottom right hand corner as I was looking at it. The idle was going from 1000 (on my after-market tacho) gradually climbing upto an indicated 1600, dropping quickly back to 1000 then doing it again. Stayed a few mins to make sure the rad was getting warm, and did a quick bleed while I was there....just in case. No air, just coolant.

Also, when you drive it on LPG when its warm underload it intermittantly hiccups, misses...dunno what you call it, but only once then is fine for a while till it does it again. Sometimes, pulling away there is no power, and revs drop. Feels fuel related to me, coz if I dump the clutch and rev it it picks up then you can drive normally, heart in mouth, till she does it again!

Petrol...she is dreadful on petrol. Yeah, she runs, but it isn't what you would call smoooth. Got the super unleaded in her as advised for the 2.1.

Spoke to gasure, and apparently there is a filter in there that can get clogged with oil that is used to carry the LPG. in 3+ years I have not had the filter changed, so its going to elite to have that done soon as I can get her booked in. Bit worried about the 30 odd miles to get there....I know I have about 10 miles b4 she starts playing up.

Is there anything else this could be??? Would a coil on its way produce this? HT leads nice and flexible. Why only when she is fully warm??

Don't trust her at the moment, and this isn't a situation that I want to continue!!

Thanks in advance for any / all assistance

Em

If you are running a pierburg 2E carb, the second choke operating lever often wears and it allows the second choke to open on tickover. I'm currently running an Astra 1800 cc weber/pierburg conversion on the Dehler which cost 80 quid new from ebay and fitted in about 1/2 hour. No choke though. Funny thing is that it now runs perfect on petrol and not as good on gas. Bloody typical!
