Hi, after a bit of thought I have decided to rebuild the aaz (earlier post) but does anybody have any experience with these ebay turbos?

these seem to be new rather than remade.
also a supplier for piston rings (and or oversize pistons) and shell bearings would be great
thanks

Good choice, and that eBay one looks the dogs, a good price I think...
You should find this interesting, about to go back on so I'll update the article a bit later... fingers crossed.

Ensure the manifold joint surface is immaculate, hard to find a lot of definitive info on re-assembly, maybe the purveyor will supply data on refitting. They don't have a gasket to the manifold as standard, but been told that sometimes a very thin stainless one is supplied with replacements.
Those bolts, HT bi-hex flange bolts, £13 each! 2 diff. lengths, need to be in good nick, trying to establish correct torque figure for them, let me know what you find? I'm going with about 35-40 lb-ft to start with, and nip them up after a few miles. Very thin smear of firegum, as can't find a suitable stainless gasket and manifold face has seen better days.
You need to check oil feed is correct angle, pipe runs very close to the exhaust manifold, ideally get it as vertical as possible so oil doesn't hang around in turbo for long (and overheat)
Do not overfill an AAZ with this JX trubo configuration. 4.5 litres and that's it! Also, ensure air-filter is clean and doesn't present a restriction on the compressor side of the turbo induction.
Should go really well... have you got a working turbo cooler fan (behind n/s tail-light)? If so aim straight at central bearing housing.

Hi,
be careful of this supplier, in the past there were many problems with motorensuche. In the german vw bus forums were many discussions. There were some problems with the warranty.

Christoph - are you saying these turbos are not reliable, badly refurbed or he's just a shyster?
James - Can'r find it in ETKA, most have packed up long ago, only seen on DoKa so far, but a fan sits in box behind tailight, sucks form Doka's plenum above wheel arch, loadsa piping, and blows directed at turbo, operatde by thermo-switch (relay cintrol unit also mounted in rear box).. can't be that important, but 'tis an air-cooled turbo in badly ventilated spot close to exhaust manifold... wouldn't worry about it.

Re turbos
Thanks for the info, i bought my van in germany and the lad i got it from said that the turbo'ed versions had problems with 'cracking' after being shut down without a period of idle to allow the heat to dissapate- perhaps the fan was to help resolve the problem?
I think a bit of mechanical sympathy would replace the need for the fan
i will price a rebuilt turbo from the local guys just in case of problems in the future- are both the turbo's air cooled (kkk & garret?)

HarryMann: There were problems with the quality of their products, and the reconsignment. Some customers got ther money back after months. We had heavy discussions around this subject.

Yes, think so, but some donor vehciles are used to fit water-cooled ones, I think Thomas (DH) has done one of these..
