Exhausts for 2.0l Aircooled - help please...!!

Hi everyone,

We need to fit a new exhaust system on our 1980 2.0l petrol air-cooled and I wondered if anyone had any recommendations of what to use?

Been looking at the various posts on here and JP exhausts seem to be highly recommended but e-mailed them and they said they don't do a system for air-cooled. Other posts seems to suggest poor fitting or poor quality from other suppliers.

Ideally would like a stainless steel system for longevity - any ideas anyone?!

Also has anyone fitted one and how difficult is it as never done oe before but happy to have a go!

Had a Bugpack header/backbox on, and loved it. But on the Isle of Eternal Rust, I would recommend the stock one.

I have a 2ltr Aircooled and have fitted a standard ernst exhaust system. The major thing to watch out for is the studs on the engine. You need to be very careful removing the nuts. Replacing the exhaust yourself is better than letting a quick fit place trash the studs.

plusgas comes in handy to remove the old one and the proper copper nuts when re-fitting are just the ticket.

Thanks very much for the advice - you look like you know what you're doing in that photo!

Where would I get the standard exhaust from and would you have idea of cost?

Also, sorry to sound thick but if plusgas the same as WD40? Never heard of it before!

Thats what good with the forum. If you don't know ur not thick,we are all in the same boat. Plusgas looks like WD40 costs the same but works like WD40 on steroids. it's the muts nuts at getting rusted bits moving you can pick it up at any decent motor factor.

I picked it up on the forum for £30, put a post on wanted. You can get new ones from http://www.gsfcarparts.com/.

My exhaust hooked up behind the heater boxes, so there was no need to remove bolts off the heads, as per above.

Yup the back box (silencer) connects to the heat exchangers.

The original post was for the "new exhaust system" I assumed it was a full system and not just the back box.

I did away with exchangers, risers etc etc and I use the propex to heat the van
Got mine from Richard @ http://www.turbothomas.com
Really nice bloke, very helpful and the onlu person I could find who would do the J tubes in SS

Just a quick update - got the new exhaust last week from JK (£426 - ouch!).

I got under the van yesterday to try and tackle the dreaded head studs ready for fitting the exhaust next weekend, so I 'Plus-gas'd the nuts up, wired brushes where I could get in, left for a few minutes then got the sockets out ready to try and remove them with much trepidation and fear of shearing the studs off and all the nightmares that would leave me with. To my suprise, the first one of eight nuts came straight off - phew! Then I tried the next one - okay again (wow!) and so on, etc until I had all 8 nuts sitting in my shaking hand! How did that happen with no slip ups or problems - this just doesn't happen to me on my bus - everything always goes wrong!

The sense of achievement was great and I can't wait now to fit the new exhaust next weekend. Lets just hope that goes as well....

I do have one hint on refitting the 2.0 litre Aircooled exhaust and that is to use a trolley jack to take the weight of each heat exchanger and jack it into place. That method is far easier than trying to lift the heat exchanger and fit it onto the cylinder head on your own.

heres another tip too m8.
dont tighten the exchangers onto the heads until the silencer is fitted or the bolt holes wont line up. get it all fitted together loosely (both exchangers loose on the heads and the silencer loose on the exchangers) get all the nuts on, then tighten the exchangers to the heads and then tighten the silencer to the exchangers. and definately use brand new gaskets everywhere.
good luck with it and wait till you hear the lovely quiet Aircooled exhaust note
