Cheers for the replys guys.

Well I bought the van, and had a look at the engine...
Did a compression test, and it was good. Found out it was only a split vaccum pipe for the brake servo, causing it lean out and not run on two cylinders.

40p bit of hose and she's running sweet. :)

A little bit of welding to do and she'll be ready for the MOT.
Looks like the gambol of buying a non runner paid off.

I can get genuine vw engines on exchange for £1105.81 plus vat, 2-10 working days delivery depending on which one, DGs and DJs can be next day sometimes, MV's take a little longer, but I need the exchange engine at time of collection or else the deposit which is the full price from VW inc the vat. However the recon engines I've had recently have been virtually all new (check the casting dates on the heads etc.) and superb - having had no back up from Laurie on a recon from him which was rubbish and some issues with EliteVW on the first one I had off them (though the replacement has been good) I reckon this is the way to go, don't think you can get better than genuine VW made in Germany specially for the same price as a Vege, Remtec or Volkspares whcih are not as good imho.
