AAZ or 1Z out of a pre 97 passat is the best. 1Y's are ok, AEF's are real bad.
AAZ, 1Z, 1Y came in loads of vw group cars. Luckily AEF's are only in polo's, caddy's and inca's and ibiza's

My engine came out of a inca Van. I assumed it was a 1Y. How do I check? And what is wrong with them? Goes ok.
Mine had a Bosch pump fitted.

Cool, my dipsticks in now in the right place
So that only leaves me with a "pooh" pump and injectors and a stupid water pump
Seems OK in my van
