Engine number location on a 1980 CT 1.6....!!

Post by The Bobdogs »

Despite my best efforts with an assortment of exhaust bandages and collars etc , it looks like time to fit a whole new system. Carl at Pirate VW in Loughborough tells me I need the engine number as the design of the exhaust changed. I have found the CT marking just to the right of the dizzy, but can't seem to find any other ID No's.
Any ideas as to where it's hiding would be appreciated, as would suggestions for exhaust suppliers...Just kampers have a CT complete system but the price of £380.00 makes me wince a little!
Regards
Andy.

Number should be where you are looking. The CT is followed by the engine number right next to it! (Should be anyway!).

Pics of naked ladies on thier way...

Oh they are, but just like legendary Microsoft's Easter Eggs, you need the special key and mouse moves to reveal them... :P

Interesting....why would someone go to the trouble of removing the serial number of the engine?
All I have are the letters CT then a blank space...maybe a recon unit?
Just Kampers exhaust kit states it is for the 1.6 CT engine so I might have to take a 'leap of faith' and just order it!
So, how do these naked easter egg ladies work then ?

Try http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/ - Ref: EXS-0176339-OL . I haven't used them yet but have them in mind for when I need one. £96.94 for a full system! Haven't checked out vat and delivery though.

DOH !
Had me all exited then!! Unfortunatley the £96.94 system is for a diesel and mine is the petrol....with the heat exchangers....and the twiddly bits...etc...etc...
Thanks for the reply anyhow
Andy.

My fault for reading and posting too quick - I haven't touched a petrol vw since 1973! - can you pick out the bits that need replacing and get them cheaper there?

just a thought,. but,. what if it's been ground off because it's been rebuilt
at some point & is no longer a CT?..

I have read 'somewhere' that stock ct heads will take a watercooled exhaust system? or was i dreaming :?

Would be nice if those that have these engines, CT, CU etc... and even DG, DJ & MV could take a good clear closeup of the ngine number's position so we could out them in the Wiki... for good!

Anyone... ? :)

Engine number on top near dizzy. I bought an exhaust kit from jk, but they dont supply all the gaskets...nor do they stock them!. Some parts you can get from ebay at a 10th of the price some gaskets from vw heritage. Or go to jk suppliers JP group in denmark. Take note that some of the JK parts have surface rust thats hard to remove because theyve sat on a shelf for so long and JK wont refund either. Oh and yes you can change the whole system with the engine still in place. I fkning know what a bitch it is..

Oh dont forget to make sure the silencer flanges are perfectly flat (with a file). Otherwise they leak...

Thanks for the tips guys!
However I have to own up to the fact that Carl at Pirate VW is doing the work for me.
My bus was already booked in for an 'engine out' fettle to sort out a vast array of oil leaks an other nastyness.
He's been prodding and poking it for about a week now and has sorted out a multitude of foul doings by persons unknown!
Looking forward to getting her back running sweetly and then explaining to Julie just why she is getting sod all for Christmas as all my cash went on the camper!!
