CV Joint kits

Simple question.
Are cheap (28 yoyos) CV Joint kits worth it or should I go for original VW?

Bus clunks when reversing with full right lock on, the clunks is about every 3 footish (approx. equal to one wheel rotation).

Quite often just a re-greasing will make them last many more thousands of miles, especially if the clunking has only just started.

I have stopped the clunking before by squirting engine oil into the joint using an old fashioned oil can, and by either forcing it down the rubber joint on the driveshaft, or by making a small hole in the bellows and squirting some through. It will stop it, and allow preparation of a more thorough fix.

Dont know about quality of the kits, but I bet baxter sells decent ones on brickworks.

I am quite surprised at the lack activity with regards to this topic.

So far I have found kits at 28, 35, 48, 75 and 650(4 off - thank you Mr. Jaeger, we'll call you).

Come guys n gals surely someone must have something to say,
this hardly the most taciturn of forums.

I replaced all of mine with the £40 kits from Just Kampers (http://www.justkampers.com/shop/type_25 ... t-kit.html).

They are quite easy to do, but need a good wallop with a lead mallet while clamped in a big vice. I also bought some extra grease to keep the sweet for a while.

By the way, getting at the wheel side is a complete pain! I was only on axle stands so space was a problem with leverage. Chocks are a must as is some string to tie up the driveshaft so you can access the bolts.

I'd recommend the hex bit from JK too.

No one has done a like-for-like comparison so its hard to answer this - hence the low replies I should think.

To my mind, the £28 ones will do fine. Plenty of grease thats the main thing and I agree on life extension simply by stripping down and repacking with grease. Mine ocasionally remind me they're getting on in years but otherwise have no probs. Its a lot of money replacing all your CV joints.

Merc Doctor (last time I was in his yard) recommended keeping a complete, greased up spare especially if touring as its often far simpler to swap a whole shaft than mess about fixing one when you're miles from home and they don't take up that much space.

Agree on wheel end being a pain.

Cheers guys, good info.

The shafts were checked yesterday whilst it was on a lift.
There is no detectable play (rock) backwards or forwards in any of the joints.

Unfortunately I could not assess the grease status.
