Glad it is all sorted now - but it begs the question - how on earth have you been able to run it until now? :!: or has it been rough for some time?

You haven't got a seized cam belt tensioner have you, allowing the timing to slip?

Only two reasons I can think of...

Pump was loose and slowly moved?

Timing belt jumped a cog?

Ah, some of the coldstart levers actually advance the timing, if i was setup originally with coldstart lever (on pump) not off, then slowly worked fwd due to non-use, that's another one...

it ran fine this morning on the way to work - though sitting in traffic jams for an hour don't fully test it

Traffic was that bad I managed to fit the stereo back in at the same time :D ( i had removed it so my bro in law could test his stereo)

Oh dear Louey, I know what those things are like when they're not starting... just dreadful  x 10

Well if everything else is set correctly now, glo plugs definitely all working properly, then poor compressions, which warm air in the inlet will help as a 'get you going' fix... or Easy Start. Must've been a bit cold this morning up there then...

looking at a couple of cars today - but it means we will be using our 'van savings' to purchase it. I'm only just back at work after being a student for 5 years so it will take a bit of time to build up saome savings again. Heather doesn't want a couple of hundred quid car - she has had enough of old bangers (an M reg is our newest car we've owned).

I'm gonna have a quick look at the van to see if anything obvious is showing, its annoying becasue it has run OK all week except for being quite loud

if the belt has jumped a cog(again) it will be noisey. mine did it on my way to college,i thought i had holed a piston or dropped a valve then i noticed the belt was sloppy to the touch, so off it came. look through the hole on the bellhousing for tdc and align the pump up with the little hole in the pulley, theres a hole in the block, stick a screwdriver or a 10mm bolt in to check. the chain tensioner may have worked loose allowing the belt to jump. :?: it happens :?:

To make things worse, the Peuguot failed its MOT this morning.

Front brakes imbalanced
Two tyres illegal
front ball joint on one side knackered
:(

WEAZLE, the van has sounded noisy all week, Marcus checked the belt last Sunday and it was still noisy but running this week.

I took the battery out and gave it a charge - only took an hour and not on rapid charge :?

The van started with ease

I reckon my battery isn't holding its charge - but it was reading over 12v before i took it out :?

Think it should be anywhere from 12.6 to 12.8V ? Its the last little bit that makes all the difference...

Needs to turn it over at 200~ 250 rpm to start I believe else the heat dissipates too quickly to ignite the fuel...
