How do i find a good AAZ?

Post by Mayor Goldie Wilson »

i am facing a tough decision of engine choice as my 1.6 TD has blown.

i want more power,
everyone seems to rate the AAZ conversion - but there seems to be no garuntee that my money spent will give me a reliable running engine.

Its not the mechanic that i would have to use that worries me - there seems to be some decent recommended ones out there - but its getting the engine.

My real question is how can i find a solid 1.9 aaz that will be as reliable as a recon 1.6 td - (selling for around £975)? Whats the Max mileage i should accept?

thanks,
i will be mayor!

It can be a bit of a gamble, but you should be able to get one for £300~£400

about 100,000- 120,00 would be max I suppose..

the trick, which has its limitations on choice, is to see it running, prefereably to drive it, start from cold, etc etc.

This does limit it...

Some yards/breakers will give a week or a month guarantee, but that doesn't help much when you have the expense of removing and refitting an engine!

If you go to a yard yourself you might be able to get one for £150 but that's abs. rock bottom these days,250-400 is more common now. It can actually be cheaper to buy a runner, a SEAT Toledo, Ibiza or old Golf/Passat

Eastern Europeans are coming over and buying anything VW Diesel I have heard...

Hope that helps a bit

A lot of the condition is based a round the cylinder head and the turbo condition, if the latter is knackered it can seriously reduce the engine life

There are good ones about...

My dad has had a selection of different aaz in his syncro. Full recon, 2nd hand low mileage, high mileage fsh etc. The best one has been a last ditch gamble engine for 150 quid torn out by our local scrap yard. As clive said they are a gamble or was it a ticking bomb............

Try to get one complete car. I picked up n plate passat td with aaz in, done 129,000 tax and tested for £480. Then you can run around in it for a while to test engine. Best way to give piece of mind and there are plenty of motors with these engines in out there. Good luck.

Here's a gamble for instance, but you could reduce the gamble by asking for mileage and if the turbo appears to have much play in the spindle

The type of bolt in the pulley end of crank is also worth checking - if its bi-hex 19mm rather than a 6 point flanker is good. If not check for any signs it's been off or loose.

Hi, i have just bought a 98 seat ibiza fitted with a aaz engine that im going to break.

This car has never been registered!

The car suffered paintwork damage when being imported, it was taken to the local VW refurb centre for pdi etc and for the paintwork to get sorted. It got forgoten about / paperwork error and has sat in the car park with thousands of other cars until last year when the refurb centre closed.

It has done delivery mileage only the engine is still in the car.

This has got to be better than a recon or almost anything else out there?!
Genuine new old stock complete aaz engine

Im looking for £700 if you are interested

Cheers Simon

Whoever buys it, don't throw the wires and plugs away for all the senders, cut them loom side and keep those multi-pin sender plugs and then work out which of the flying wires you need afterwards :)

Should be good to go, because a new 'short' engine is over £1200 now! and this will have head and new turbo etc...

I beg to differ with that one.
I've fitted countless AAZ's and never had one die.
I had one that breathed quite heavily but was cured randomly by fitting an oil cooler.
