Driver door lock

The door lock on my van won't let me push the mushroom down unless the door is shut. This is only on the drivers side. Is this normal?

Yes. Stops you locking the keys in.

Think it might be possable to lock the drivers door when open if the van has factory central locking, or maybe its the passengers door that won't lock when open eather on them? Sounds more plausable as otherwise locking the key in is really easy as you'll know there won't be another door still open?
