2.0L Aircooled T25, power loss
Hi
I've been using my 1981 Aircooled 2.0L for over a year, been driving back and forth from Holland/Belgium to Wales a lot, It's been brill, sits nicely on motorway at 70, and if i feel like it, it'll go 85 (try not to)...
The other day I ran out of fuel, and since it's been losing power in 4th gear on the freeway - I assumed there must be crap in the lines as you'd expect after that, but it's been thoroughly checked/blown thorough and cleeaned, then I was told my Carbs are not right. I spent a lot of money recently getting people to look at it, but in Belgium, it's not easy.
I know a limited amount about engines, but what one guy said makes sense: The carbs are worn and he adjusted them as much as possible, - the way i understand it, the flappy bitts in the carbs have a lot of play and sometimes when blowing along at "top speed" it just backs off and only gets about 50-60 mph ---- while at idle, sometimes it runs too fast, and if I "jab" the accelerator, it settles down to a normal speed.....
Does this sound normal? - I was thinkin of just getting new carbs, but i have no idea how much they cost, and cant find anywhere that sells them.
Do I need to know excactly what kind of engine i have? If so - how do i tell?
ps - not sure if I've confused anyone as to why I even metioned the running out of fuel part, just thought I'd say everything, ( but i've been assured that it's not the problem )

you will have a type 4 Aircooled engine. code cu.
stock carbs are twin solex.
if you can, get to steve at www.gasure.co.uk as he is the master at refurbing and setting these carbs.
dont whatever you do fit one of those bloody single weber conversions as they are c rap!!!

I'm guessing this would solve my probs, but is there a cheaper option - I had no idea carbs could cost so much - Doh!!!

they too are not ideal.
the only way to go is dellorto 36 or 40 mm drla.

carbs are not cheap and stock ones are no longer avaiable.
cheapest option is to refurb your original ones after that dont mess about with anything other than the dells. they will give more power and better mpg.
carbs will be 100 or so manifolds 65 linkage 65 filters 20 then bank on around 200 notes for a rolling rd session to jet em (massivley important otherwise your motor will go bang!!)
so not cheap either!!

to be honest there are a few good chaps in swansea and cardiff but if your carbs are shot your only option really is steve at gasure. you cant tune a shot carb.
cardiff classic vw in cardiff are reasnoble when it comes to setting and balancing carbs but not that cheap. it may be worth one final diagnosis before spending your money, but steve is not that expensive to get it sorted once and for all.......

I would have thought you could shorten the cable to throw the linkage further to solve that?

ha ha - I'm learning a lot from all this - bit by bit.....
(would be simpler if it was an aircraft tho)

Try the fuel filter, should be just near to tank outlet on the offside, tucked up behind the chassis rail, but there's more than enough room to change it without jacking it up. These can get really clogged up and full of gunk, especially if you ran out of petrol, and they are quite cheap too. Should be less than a fiver from most motor factor type places, as they are just a universal type.
