Which Waxoyl - clear or black? & how do I fit insulation

Hi all

I've done a quick forum search and can't seem to find out the difference between clear and black waxoyl - apart from the colour obviously. Is one better than the other or is there no difference?

I currently have the door card's off so thought I would waxoyl the insides of the doors before putting the cards back. Also I'm going to fit thermawrap insulation, does anyone know how I get it to stay in place? Irishkeets thread is excellent on the subject but it doesnt seem to mention how you attach it to the van, am I missing the obvious?? I did notice that Irishkeet had some rigid insulation in his doors too, what is it? Should I put some of that in too, and again how do I get it to stay in place - sorry for the usual girlie questions, I would normally just try and hope but thought I may as well try and get advice first!!

I would say very simply that the black is best underneath the vehicle, makes it look all smart and new, and the clear is better for inside doors, panels, etc as it lets the colour shine through and is more pleasing to the eye.

The black can be used in conjunction with the hammerite waxoyl underseal for a durable finish.

That said, if you are doing inside bits then just get the clear, it's fine underneath too. I find it much cheaper to buy the 5 litre tins from agricultural merchants or the like.

Halfords does aerosol cans of clear, if you are just doing the doors then a squirt of that along the bottom edge, where the water collects will make a big difference.

Many use the clear waxoyl cos you can see whats going on underneath. Makes sense actually. Door insulation I'm not sure on but they do let in (as does most of the front) a lot of road noise (as well as heat out) so its something I'll be tackling next Summer.

Thermawrap do a silver adhesive tape for sticking their insulation up. It sticks well to the inside of the van, but not if there's any trace of waxoyl on the panel where you're trying to put the tape.

My suggestion would be to avoid putting waxoyl where you're going to want to insulate. If there's rust on a panel I'd be wary about covering it with insulation, unless the rust is just at the edges of the panel (most likely scenarion imho), in which case I'd try treating the rust, put insulation up but not covering the rust with insulation or sticky tape, and then spray waxoyl over the treated rust once the insulation is well fastened to the panel. Just a suggestion.
