Legal requirements for Window tinting?

Post by Cruz »

Can anyone tell me the legal requirements concerning window tinting?

Are there any maximum light percentage figures that have to be adhered to, or is that just for the cab door windows?

I seem to recall 70% of light has to be able to pass through the cab door windows by law. Is that right?

My old 83 van looks to have no tint on the cab windows so could I tint them up to the legal percentage? What about the quarterlights?

Cheers

Phone these people. Their stuff is tons better than the thin difficlt to apply stuff I first got from Halfords and they can advise on how and what to fit.

The easiest and best way to be legal is not to do any of the fronts!! Police love to pull people with any tint just to check it, i used to have legal tint on one of my motors ended up taking it off the fronts as kept getting pulled!

In basic terms anything forward of the B pillar must allow 70% light to pass through.
Even un tinted glass will only allow 85-90% light to pass through (IIRC) so it doesn't leave much scope. Most DIY light tint films will add about 30% tint so even they will take it over the legal limit.
Because of this, there are differing views as to whether any film is legal. Some pro tinters are now doing a super light legal tint for front windows.
eg http://www.ttints.co.uk/automotive_film.htm
You can also get a UV film which will cut down on heat but it won't do anything for looks.
I may be able get some standard glass tested for reference to see what the actual VLT is. It won't be till next week but if I do I'll post the results.

Hello, I bought a t25 already tinted and was advised by a friendly policeman to remove the tints on the front windows but that it was OK to leave them on the quarter lights. This turned out to be a good option - without the tints on the windows the world seemed a brighter place and I stopped thiking it was going to rain any minute. Leaving the titns on the qurter lights still stopped glare from the mirrors when idiots are on full beam behind me!

A classic example of why the law limits the emount of tint!

I think the front side windows are aloud to be slightly more tinted than the windscreen but neather can be very much. Behind the B pillar you can go as dark as you like.

I'm a bit confused how you can see the mirrors through the quaterlights though, the mirrors are usally mounted rearward of the quaterlights so you look through the side windows??

I like the orignal Caravelle green tint, subtle but nice!
