Anti roll bar links keep snapping

Post by chriscburgess »

my o/f side anti roll bar snapped back in Feb so I replaced it thinking it must have been the original. I have just noticed that the new GSF replacement has also snapped.

Any clues as to what might cause that? The replacement was brand new iin Feb.

please excuse , but do you mean the anti roll 'bar' or do you mean the drop link which joins the anti roll bar to the steering knuckle?
If its the latter - where did it break? Near the bottom (threaded end)? If so, did you replace the bushes when you changed it? Is your van lowered in anyway? Usually snap because of undue tension caused by tired suspension of worn bushes.......

oops I meant to say the link bar. Yes I replaced bushes all round on both sides and on the actual roll bar itself. it broke near the threaded end just above the knuckle. Could I have overtightened it? I did not use a torque wrench.

A good, tried and tested tip :-

when I replaced (everything!) on my vans suspension (straight drop link sort) I had all sorts of problems with it straight afterwards, its seemed because all that new rubber has little initial 'give' in it (and maybe VW original stuff better quality?). I ended up, after much frustration, easing the lower nuts on the ends of the drop links and driving van for a day or so, checking them every day (so nuts didnt fall off!) and gradually tightening them. This seemed to allow them to 'bed in' much better. By end of the week all was tightened and been good ever since.
Maybe there is so much tension there that as soon as your suspension operates, the link gives out? And, as you will know, they aint cheap!
Good luck.....

hrmmm! not sure what size my bushes and bar are. It is the curved link bar and I just bought everything I needed from GSf. Have to say they work out a lot cheaper than JKampers - so go there!

O well will have to fit new link bar and will try the keep it loose method suggested by fairwynds.

thanks guys

Just a stab in the dark - do you have many speed humps in your area? these things are lethal on suspension for all vehicle's let alone a 2 ton VW tank!
It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!
