Quite right. The metalic particles remain in suspension so spraying is only way to apply them. Mind you, for the adventureous, roller van in evostik with a rubber roller then get a catering sized tub of glitter and.....


.....spend the next 20 years clearing the neighbourhood of glitter particles.

anyone got any comments on primer vs rustoleum over bare metal?

ive got a few bits to tidy tommorow, id imagine most of the rust will sand completly out on this project

cant decide if i should prime anyway for added protection , or straight on with the rustolem

ive got
rust encapsulator
bonda primer
zinc primer

anyone had any reactions with primers?

just sanded the bits up and theyre pretty nasty lol....ive ordered some por15 to go under the rustoleum , hoping that'l hold things back

anyone used rustolem over por15?

well for anyone intrested , i used the por15 over the pitted rust , it dries like rock overnight , its pretty hard to sand but once sanded flat all over the rustoleum goes on top with no problems at all

its got 3x por15 and 3x rustoleum so lets see how that lasts lol

Well i have started to pai my camper wi e roller. Painted he new boot lid inside and ouand paininside of my nw Passenger door. Have painted inside the sliding door seal `shut` and it looking well smart.
I am feeling a litle anxious about doing the rest of the van. I have spen a lot of money on this van and I want it to look the best.
I have replaced lots of panels and spent hours of welding on it.
New high top roof / New guttering....
Will post some pics when complete.
Nice tip on rollering....was going to spend 2 k on a new paint job....

id consider a coat or two of white to give it a good base

My Camper is custard yellow anyway.....found it hard to cover my new tailgate though....the new tailgate was maroon....

Hi,
I've spent about 3 months painting my Bug with Marlin Blue Rustoleum using a roller . At first I was very impressed with the finish using the roller/coloursanding technique , the shine from the roller is impressive however the colour sanding is very labour intensive and hard work. After completing two wings , front and rear apron and the roof i noticed already the paint was not looking as perfect as when first applied. The problem with this stuff is that it is air drying and after applying a number of coats it takes forever to harden (mine is still soft after 3 months ! ). I changed to a small compressor a good mask and two pack (I do work in a paint factory so the paint was free ! ) the finish is 10x better. I wouldn't never use Rustoleum again two pack is the best. With the Rustoleum light colours if they get stained (leaves sat on car for example) the paintwork will be marked. With two pack it is a much harder , resilient finish that will last. Anyway if anyone wants some Marlin Blue cheap I have a 2.5 litre unopened tin for sale as I wont be using it again ! If anyone wants it , make me an offer !!

Just been reading through this thread and was wondering about 'shine'... my Westy was resprayed a few years ago, and who ever did it did a ... well an 'ok' job, but they got paint on all the black handles! Cream splodges everywhere! How do I get them off? Or should I paint the handles... HOW do you paint plastic handles?!

Anyway, back to 'shine'... the new, but now getting old, cream respray has very little shine - is this normal, i.e. would it originally have been so dull when factory sprayed in 1982? If not, how do I get the shine? Should it have had some sort of lacquer applied as a top coat?

I'll let others suggest how you clean up your handles...safely!

Your paint shouldn't lose all shine if it:

a) had been buffed/cut after spraying
b) a good coat of polish applying, personal preferences abound, I use Mer

No don't lacquer it!

Often, its the paint oxidising + UV damage

First you will need to clean it thoroughly (with a product, again I use a Mer wash/clean)

Then it sounds like you may need to cut it back quite hard and being a big vehcile of many sq. feet, either manually in small stages or buy/rent a buff and rouge

Then apply polish... again, steady as you go, don't rush it, or take on too much at one time

and now is a good time, cool, not too drying weather nor baking sun (and you won't overheat either)

No doubt you'll get plenty of suggestion son what polish to use and best cutting agaent...
