Excuse this not being very technicalally put (but I am a girl and have no idea)I have an air cooled, 2 litre t25 and I have been told the twin carbs will need replacing soon as they are very tired. It can be replaced with something I think was called a single webber or similar. My questions are:-
1. How much should this cost?
2. Are there any up sides to having it replaced?
3. Are there any downsides to having it replaced?
4 What experience of this have you had?
5. Should I do it and if not what alternatives do I have.

no no no no dont fit the central weber conversion thing cos its "pooh"!! these things are not meant for a wedge no matter what anyone tells ya!! the chokes are waaay to small and the inlet will ice due to its excessive length. avoid at all costs.
speak to someone who knows these motors like www.raceshack.co.uk and fit a pair of dellortos, it will be better on mpg have far more power and will sound great.
i fitted em to my old Aircooled wedge and it transformed the bus.
if you cant stretch to the dells go and take your van to www.gasure.co.uk and get steve to rebush your original solex carbs. this will be a cheaper but decent alternative but he wont do mail order on your carbs and be advised to book him early as he always has loads on.......

I used dellorto drla 36's on mine (2lt Aircooled 78 bay) with i think 28 venturis and 170 mains and 60 idles ....from memory long time back. OR you could go for webber ICT's- cheaper posibly and still good but less finely adjustable, still will be a lot better tha your old solex's and SO much less fiddly/annoying/worn out etc ......BTW 36 drla's set up fpr economy not power will still give loads more torque that u hve now, Good lcuk Tim

mine were 36drlas but with 32mm chokes 55 idles and 145 mains and it gave fifteen horse more at the rear wheels (dyno proven) and as you say a healthy dollop of torque too.
cant reccomend this mod enough.

Personally I would just get your carburetors professionally rebuilt. I got Gower & Lee (based in Bushey Heath, Watford) to rebuild my Solex 34 Pict-3 for my 1600 beetle and it came back like new.
However, it is not cheap (at about £110 per carburettor) but I think it will be far better in the long run.
Fitting different carburetors to what the van was designed for can have other implications such as carburetor icing (I cannot comment about the dells). This is usually caused by lack of vacuum going to the air filter unit's warm temperature vacuum unit's control flap, hence freezing cold air inside the air filter unit and freezing cold air going into the carburetors.
This was the problem I had with my 1973 1300 (with a 1600 twin port engine) when I had a Brosol H30/31 installed on it.
Good luck with your van.
