5 speed gear box question

Post by ermie571 »

Ok folks, got a 5 speed that was mated to a 1.9, now mated to a 2.1

first gear is through a gate and down, underneath reverse. second is a dog leg upwards.

Sometimes, going into first is difficult - just stiff, then when it comes out there is a distinct click like a plate/spring releasing under the gear stick. It may do this for a couple of gear changes, then the noise will dissappear. Gear changes in all other gears are firm, but not difficult.

Is there something I need to adjust underneath? And will the short shift kit help in gear changes in 5 speed box?

oooo how forceful!!!

Is the gatehouse under that box thing? Am guessing this needs to be removed and grease shoved in. Any grease? Think we have some CV grease in a tub somewhere, or is there anything betterer? Will nip to halfwits at lunchtime, and do the deed b4 bonfire bash....

Thanks Mocki,

CV grease should be fine! drop the spare wheel down and you will see the box its open on the back side (when viewed from the front) grease up anything and everything in there and give the gears stick a bit of a move about to get the grease into as much as possible, should help no end!!!, if it dont work brign ya grease with you to the farm and ill have a look at it got all my tools in the van so could have a good look!

you dont need to remove it, its open at the back side.
mine had the same symtoms when i got it, and i used multipupose grease, but any you got really i guess, its dont high melting point, but why buy more when you have some?

also slip yer rubber up and slar some round the ball at the bottom of the stick! from the inside

James....Many thanks!!! Hopefully won't need to disappear underneath it. Will sort the grease thing out later.

Mocki - will do it from the inside too. Maybe I won't need the short shift kit after all!

short shifters dont fix probs you already have, they make the shift shorter once you have the gear selection sorted.......

they do really work, but they dont magic problems away, other than changing the wireless station when changing down

Ian,

Smutt and filth?!!

Dunno how....I have re-read my posts...I don't see anything about smooth hand action?!! I didn't even use the word KNOB!! *snigger*!!! :D

Well you did say Carry on!

grease cartridges....should I wait for them then b4 greasing....will they be better than the muck in the tub?? Lubrication (oooeerr missus) wise?

Sahll send you a reminder...when? Is now a good time? Just a reminder to bring some with you!!

Mocki - thanks for comments on short-shift. Will see if lubrication eases things in the knob department (smutty enough....has anyone hit the report button yet?) first.

Off to the paranoia thread to apologise....
