Sealing a Westfalia rear window

Post by Helga »

Hi! I have got a westfalia, 1982, and at the moment there appears to be water getting in at the rear, now there seems to be water in the double glazed back window, plus the rust is appearing at the bottom of the window, plus there are cracks at the top of the double glazing - now my question is could I reseal this window by 'gluing' the cracks? Or should I buy a new window? I'm a novice.. so would I be able to fit the window myself? Plus... WHERE can I get a new window? JustKampers don't seem to have them, is there somewhere else?

Thanks!!!!

Westy double glazed window won`t be available anywhere new, it`s either a second-hand one, or a standard glass rear window, which will fit in the same place, using the same rubber seal (you`ll get a glass window almost anywhere so it`s an easy option, S/H Westy window expect to pay over £50 and it will still be 20 years old).

When you get the window out and pull the seal out you`ll probably find a rotten hole under the seal and that`s where the water is getting in :( It`s a welding up job to sort it, or if it`s a tiny hole then bodge it with sealant :?
Keep it real.

Can you get the glass windows new? Is it an easy novice job to change the window - I have looked in the 'self-help' section noline, and it SEEMS easy enough?

Were all the T25 rear windows the same size? There are loads on ebay from different years - will any fit?

Thanks

I've done the rear window twice (glass). Was a fairly straight forward job when I did it. I believe the key is to push it from the inside out to remove. I used some Cat 5 cable and stuck it under the lip of the seal to help. Replacement was the reverse process, but I had to use a little persuasion from the palm of my hand on the outside side of the seal to ensure it fitted in place correctly.

We had a similar issue with Blue (1984 Club Joker) with the rear window leaking and using captains creeping crack cure did help, but as usual use at your own risk.

Cheers
