Ignition switch problem

Post by Walrus »

There is a 70A relay up behind the fuse box that comes on with the ignition. I appear to have a faulty ignition switch: once the engine is running if I 'tweak' the key left or right I can hear the relay coming on and off, and accordingly the wipers, headlights etc work (or dont!). Can the switch be cleaned/adjusted or should I change it? Is it easy to get to? - the manuals seem to be a bit sparse on information.

Don't mess about trying to clean, replaced ASAP, last time I priced one up think it cost £8.51 from GSF.
This ignition switch was generic across much of the VW/Audi range pre 1990 and although I wouldn't necessarily call them weak, they were very often changed with problems as descibed.

Steering wheel off
plastic couling off
Remove the three long screws that hold the switchgear in place and any multiplugs etc
undo the sheer bolt that holds the aluminium ignition housing
Insert the key and turn to release the lock from the column
pull off housing to facilitate the removal of the two screws holding the ignition switch
Reverse operation with new switch installed
Forgive me if I've forgotten anything
Approx 30-40 minute job for a first timer
Meant to add** keep your steering wheel in the straight ahead position when removing and refit the same
