BF Goodrich's have their limits..
I had the 215/75R15 BFG AT's on my Kombi swapped from the Mercs steelies onto my new Mefros today.
One could not be balanced as the casing was running too far out, one other was marginal. The chap doing it reckoned there was some internal damage to the tyres. These have been on the Kombi since 2003 and have around 45k on them, and there is still around 10mm of tread left. However they've had quite some punishment on occasions. Some of the rocky Dales lanes spring to mind.
I think I've paid the price for running 3-ply tyres on a two-ton truck when I should have been running 8-ply. Don't get me wrong they are great tyres and I'm happy I've got the MT's on the pickup, but I think I'll be a tad gentler on those from now on.

I wonder what BFG who charge up tp £100 each for these have to say about balance (presumably symmetry or thickness issues)...
when my Machos, remoulds, look dreadful but don't have enormous weights on them. No, they don't last as long... by a long shot!
Wonder also what BFG would say if a new one was returned as 'unbalanceable' within reasonable tolerances... via the supply route/agent.
Presuming of course it definitely isn't the wheel, new or not?

My 14" AT's hardly needed balanceing from what the fitters comments were, they didn't seem to think you'd get that from an Insa Turbo (infact they reconed a 16" rim didn't have the space for that much Zinc weights (Yes Zinc, lead isn't green enough anymore aparently, though it was actully good at the job))
Mine have about 13mm tread on which isn't far off new, so if 45k takes off say 4mm they should be around for quite a while! Myabe theres truth in the legend that a LR 110 can do 100k on a set of BFG's. The BFG Track edges on my landy only have 4mm left and I was surprised how well theyn still work in mud, though they slide on the road - kind of the oposite of the 4mm colway MT BFG ripoffs I used to run on it which are starting to show their ware in mud.
As for the Colway MT BFG ripoffs in snow, they wern't bad, though probubly not as good as the Goodyear Wranglers on the other series 1, they aren't as good in mud though.

Are BFG MTs any good in snow?
Never had any BFGs, but ran Colways for a while and now running General Grabber AT2 225/75 R15 S on Mefros. I've driven a fair amount in snow and I can vouch that the Grabbers exhibit fantastic traction in 'slippy' conditions. They never feel sketchy, but like Andy says they are ATs, they're not the best best in mud though and tend to well up quite quickly in particular types of mud. That said if I was going for a snow tyre the GG ATs would be my call.
