weird ticking noise

Post by el sketcho »

Just got back from the New Forest for the weekend and when driver there and back there was a weird ticking noise coming from around the dash area. When I accelerated the ticking got faster, and when I took my foot off the throttle it slowed down. Any Ideas?

Sounds like the old speedo/speedo cable thing.

My cure - turn the radio up!

You might want to check that the cable is correctly installed in the speedo.

Watch the speedo needle at very low speed ...you will see it 'stutters' the ticking is it hitting the small pin that stops it falling off the dial !!!

Mines done it for years...had me fooled for a while!

I've had an annoying ticking seeming to come from the dash and getting quicker as my speed increased but it was a small stone stuck in the tread of the tyre smacking the tarmac as the wheel went round......

I have the same but it sounds like its coming from inside the heater is this like yours?
does the tick speed up straight away or does it only start ticking at a certain rev then get faster until you change gear?

Thanks for the replies. The ticking gets faster when I accelerate. Molly man it's not the needle hitting the pin coz it's still ticking when I'm traveling at 50mph. It could be the speedo, I'll have a look when I get home. 1664, I don't think it's a stone coz it does sound like it's coming from the dash instruments or just below. It kinda sounds like a relay click, if that helps at all

Relays should be on the opposite side of the dash to speedo. The speedo cable can tick, broken strands within the cable can catch and make the noise, check the cable is installed with smooth curves, or try a squirt of oil down the cable,

I know tony, but that's as similar sound as I could think of. I'll check the cable when I get home

Noisy speedo cable or leaf in heater fan.
Oil or fiddling for the former and a blast of full fan speed for latter.

Check speedo cable is secured to clip on speedo and that the cable is entering the speedo straight ie. at 90 degrees.
A small drop of oil on the speedo where the cable enters may help as well.
