What about noises and changing gear generally ? Partic stiff or difficult to get out of 3rd or top?

If it feels like 2 gears are engaging at once and locking the box then it's breaking up... STOP now and get the whole thing diagnosed before a hole appears in the casng.

If there's no problem, why won't it roll backwards?
That sounds like a problem to me.
There isn't many options; either clutch is worn out or tranny is starting to break and about to grenade.

IIRC, when 3rd/4th gears/syncros start cracking it can cause the problem you are experiencing.... and if the cracked part breaks it breaks the housing ruins it. Not positive of this, but pretty sure. Read it somewhere on the web along with pics of cracking gears etc.

Yes, worth checking..

Lloyd, you're talking about what I was talking about... locking up in 2 gears at same time, had it myself...

So:
Drain the oil and sieve it on the way out and analyse the tree on the magnetic drain plug
