diesel turbo problems

Post by slinkyboat »

Hi,
can anyone help me with my 1.6 td crewcab. I got the van as a restoration, initial phase is to get it through an MOT without spending too much to see if it's worth the candle.
BUT
I have oil in my exhaust which I believe is coming from a leaky turbo;
Can I remove the turbine wheels and blank off the spindle holes, effectively un-turboing it for the meantime. Or does anyone know where I can get a cheap 2nd hand unit?

£400 from Midland Turbos at Colick near Notts :D
That is recon of course!, but mine looked like new and works like new.
How long are you keeping the motor?, if a week don't bother, if 10 years , then fine.
I've had mine 17 years now so don't fit crap worn out bits 8)

£400 seems to be around the going rate.
With Holsets in Huddersfield there seems to be a few turbo recon places around here.
I use a company called SCM turbo's, most of the staff have come from Holsets accross the road!

Enough oil to make the exhaust pipe wet, not smoking but I haven't run it for long as it's at my workshop and I have some other issues to investigate before I run it up to full temp.
I'd happily spend £400 on a wagon i'd built some confidence in but for the moment we're seeing how we go.
Can anyone answer my original question - is it viable to de-turbo for the short term...

Would expect the hassle to be too much and the benefit not worth it - by the time you've removed turbo and messed about with it, and then found that without the boost she'll be running richer most of the time (would think) and a few other things to boot...
Your best bet 1st would be to find out if the turbo really has got bad seals, bearings or damaged impellers. If all seems quite tight, look elsewhere, like overfilled sump, dirty air-filter, leaky vac pipes etc. Changed the oil and filters? 4.5 litres of oil only?

The fact no-one responds quickly and +vely usually indicates this is not something many consider or have done... but as always, could be wrong.

If it's not smoking under power (not tested yet I know) then turbo could be OK... but bit frustrating for respondees when you cannot go and test what peeps are suggesting due situation, so prob. find you're on your own a bit here
