Eberspacher Heaters
I have just bought a Westfalia with a 2.1 petrol engine. The van has an eberspacher heater. There is a control unit at the back of the van with a rocker switch which turns on the heat or just blows air, in addition there is a red and a green light and a dial which goes from 1-7. The unit is difficult to start from cold and it seems to be flooding, as restricting the flow of fuel to the metering pump allows it to work. Once warm it will fire up at will. However, it will suddenly stop and the red light will come on. Anyone shed any light on the problem
Can anyone help or point me in the direction of a Westfalia manual that describes the operating instructions for the controls. I also need to know how the timer situated at the front of the van works,

heres a tip
with the engine running and charging the both the main and the leisure batteries (check these first)
turn the rear switch to heat and if its has a thermostat turn that to full and the switch in the front turn that up to full , then listen , it should kick in and slowly start , then you should hear ticking , more fan blowing more ticking and then it should drop and kick in full blow , let it run and run for at least 1/2 hour (keep the engine running btw) ,
then switch both off front and rear , the heater with drop and then kick up again for about 4 or 5 minutes , this cools the unit , then it should stop , at this point switch the engine off
if all this happen then the heater is ok ,if not then not all is lost

the ebber has a voltage sensor in it , so with the engine running and if your alternator is work correctly then you should have 14ish volts at the battery , also check the voltage at the fuse , make sure theres 12+ v after the fuse , dirty connections will cause voltage drop which the ebber will pick up on and shut down
ps i'll move this to teccie for you

Eberspacher firing up
I had a problem with our eberspacher firing up, similar in detail. Even with engine running or hooked up it would fire up then cut out.
From pure chance I checked our leisure battery (standby/ leisure whatever, fits under one of the front seats in a westy) and it was prehistoric
.
I changed it and the Eberspacher now runs even without additional power from engine running or hook up. Be careful though you don't want to do that too often as the little glow plug and fan sucks the juice out of the battery pretty quickly and seeing as you'll be lucky to find an actual leisure battery to fit in the hole the car battery's that do fit don't like to be unloaded very often.
I do have a manual for an erberspasher on our '87 westy of that's of any use? let me know and I'll scan it and send it.
If you're still in a quandry there's a comprehensive thread somewhere (I'm sure on 80-90) on refurbishment of an eberspacher including all the various sensors and their replacement part numbers from Farnell.
